
I stood rooted to the spot, my pulse hammering in my veins as Charles approached. His movements were deliberate, each step echoing in the silence of the room. The sight of his face, so unnaturally smooth, was a jigsaw puzzle of expectations and reality. I had never imagined this—a visage more alien than monstrous.
“You see, Leah,” he continued, his voice barely above a whisper, “I was once like you, desperate and willing to do anything for the ones I loved.”
