For nearly a century, the state of Texas maintained one of the most famous and deeply symbolic rituals in the history of the modern justice system. It was the tradition of the last meal, a practice that allowed death row inmates to request a final, customized feast of their choosing before facing execution. This ritual was rooted in a mixture of historical symbolism, religious overtones, and a basic acknowledgment of human dignity in a prisoner’s final hours on earth.
