One of the officers knelt down to Ethan’s level, offering him a reassuring smile. “Hey, buddy, you’re safe now. We’re going to help you, okay?” Ethan nodded slowly, though he still seemed unsure. The officers took our statements, and I provided them with the details of the call from Lucy. I could see their expressions harden as they pieced together what had happened. It was clear to everyone that this was a case of neglect, and possibly abuse.
As they made arrangements for Ethan’s immediate care, I turned my attention back to him. “Ethan, do you have anyone else you’d like to call? Maybe your dad?” I asked softly. He nodded, and I handed him my phone. The conversation was brief, punctuated by Ethan’s small voice explaining to his father what had happened. I couldn’t hear the other side, but I could imagine Tom’s shock and horror. Soon after, the police coordinated with Tom to reunite him with Ethan, ensuring he would be in safe hands.
