On our first date the man called me fat and pathetic and humiliated me in

As he continued his barrage of insults, I felt a strange sense of calm wash over me. It was as if a switch had flipped, and I realized that I was not going to let this man, this stranger, dictate how I felt about myself. I took a deep breath, stood up, and confronted him.

“You’re right,” I said, my voice steady and clear. “I did expect something different. I expected to meet a man who was as kind and charming in person as he was in his messages. But now, I see the real you, and I pity you.”His laughter stopped abruptly, a flicker of confusion crossing his face. I could feel the eyes of the restaurant patrons on us, but I was beyond caring. I had nothing to lose and everything to gain by standing up for myself.
