Before You Get Your Hopes Up: A Lesson in Self-Worth

I was in a restaurant chatting with a friend when a guy sat next to me.

He said, “Before you get your hopes up, I have a girlfriend.” I looked at him, smiled, and replied, “Before you get your hopes up, I have dreams bigger than this conversation.”

He seemed taken aback, so I explained. “I’ve spent years focusing on myself—building my career, traveling, and working on my mental health. I’m here today celebrating a new chapter in my life, not looking for one to start with anyone else.” My friend smiled knowingly; she’d been by my side through all the ups and downs.
