“Lily,” Judge Hart spoke again, the name heavy with unsaid things, with unspoken years. His voice was steady now, though the edges were still frayed with emotion. “Do you have counsel present here today?”
I shook my head, finding my voice a moment later. “My lawyer… he didn’t show up.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened imperceptibly, a flicker of anger passing over his features before he regained control. His eyes flickered to Ethan and Vanessa, assessing them with a cold, professional gaze. They shifted under the scrutiny—the predator suddenly aware it might not be at the top of the food chain.
“Very well,” he said, voice dropping to a calm, judicial register. “Ethan Cole, you will be held accountable for your actions here today. Violence and intimidation have no place in this court or any other. Vanessa Thompson, your actions will also be recorded and dealt with accordingly.”
Vanessa’s face blanched, her confidence slipping into bewilderment. Ethan’s arrogance folded into incredulity, a flash of anger sparking in his eyes. “You can’t do this,” he blustered, his facade cracking. “You’re just a—”
“I am the law here, Mr. Cole,” Ryan interrupted sharply, his tone brooking no argument. “And you will show respect, not just to this court, but to the mother of your child.”
The mention of the child seemed to anchor him, grounding the chaos of the moment with the reminder of new life, of continuation. I placed a protective hand over my belly, feeling a surge of gratitude and something akin to hope.
Ryan leaned back, eyes still on me, softer now, filled with an emotion I couldn’t quite decipher—regret, perhaps, or a promise to make amends. “We will reconvene in two weeks. Lily, I suggest you secure representation. This court will ensure you receive a fair hearing.”
With that, he rose, signaling the end of the session. The doors opened again, but I remained standing, buoyed by something I hadn’t felt in so long—support, even if it was from an unexpected source.
As the courtroom emptied, I caught Ethan’s eye once more, his expression a mix of fury and disbelief. Vanessa trailed behind him, her earlier bravado nowhere to be seen. I turned away from them, focusing instead on the future, on the life growing within me, and the newfound strength that today had ignited.
