Officials Respond After Concerns Raised About Punch the Monkey

Punch, a baby Japanese macaque born July 26, 2025, at Ichikawa City Zoo near Tokyo, captured hearts around the world after being rejected by his mother shortly after birth. Without the crucial maternal bond snow monkeys typically rely on, keepers stepped in to raise him by hand. To comfort the tiny macaque, staff introduced soft enrichment items. Punch quickly formed a strong attachment to a plush orangutan toy, which he cuddled constantly. Photos and videos of him clinging to the stuffed animal went viral, turning him into a social media star and drawing crowds to the zoo.

Recently, however, concerns surfaced after a video showed an adult monkey dragging Punch inside the enclosure. Many viewers feared he was being bullied. Zoo officials explained that the behavior was part of normal social correction as Punch begins integrating into the troop. “While Punch is scolded, he shows resilience and mental strength,” the zoo stated, asking supporters to cheer him on rather than feel sorry for him.
