A movie so extreme it was once blocked in its home country is now available on Netflix. And one particular scene has sparked debate all over again.
Netflix is full of movies that make us laugh, cry, or sit on the edge of our seats. But sometimes a film shocks audiences for completely different reasons. Gandu, which can now be streamed in the UK, is one of those films.
The reason? One scene reportedly shows real sex between the actors, something that is almost never seen in mainstream movies. Because of this, the film quickly became highly controversial when it was first released.
The movie follows a young, angry rapper who feels trapped in his life. He secretly steals money from his mother’s boyfriend and escapes into a world filled with drugs, music, and reckless adventures. But while the story itself is intense, it wasn’t the plot that people talked about the most.
Instead, it was one particular scene involving the film’s two stars – Anubrata Basu and Rii Sen. In the scene, the pair appear to have unsimulated sex on camera.

The movie was directed by Qaushiq Mukherjee, who later spoke about the controversial moment. According to him, the actors were close friends, and both agreed to film the scene for real. He explained that they were fully committed to the moment during filming.
When the film first premiered in 2010, reactions were strong. Some viewers were shocked and even walked out of the cinema.
In its home country of India, the movie struggled to reach theaters because many believed it was simply too explicit for audiences.
It took nearly two years for the film to gain wider attention. Despite the controversy, some critics actually praised the film.
