Born Lesley Hornby, Twiggy was just a shy teenager hoping to launch her modeling career in 1966. At 5-foot-6, she was told she was too short for the industry. During a visit to London’s House of Leonard salon, famed stylist Leonard of Mayfair asked to try his new cropped haircut on her.
Though unsure, Twiggy felt too intimidated in the posh salon to refuse. She returned the next day and spent seven hours cutting, coloring, and reshaping her hair. The result? A bold blonde pixie that changed everything. Photographer Barry Lategan captured the look, and when a Daily Express fashion editor saw the photos, Twiggy was soon featured as “The Face of ’66.” Her dramatic lashes — inspired by a childhood rag doll — became part of her signature style.
