A team of federal agents stormed in, led by a determined woman in a crisp suit. The laughter dissipated instantly, replaced by a tense, suffocating silence.
“Rebecca Mitchell?” the agent asked, her eyes scanning the room until they landed on me.
“Yes,” I replied, my voice steady with newfound resolve.
She nodded, then turned to Kyle. “Kyle Thompson, we have a warrant for your arrest on charges of fraud and identity theft.”
The color drained from Kyle’s face as two agents stepped forward, gripping his arms. “What is this?” he sputtered, trying to maintain his bravado. “There must be some mistake!”
“No mistake,” the agent replied coolly. “We acted on a report filed by Miss Mitchell, who suspected you of unauthorized financial activities. We traced the transfer to an account under your name.”
I watched as the reality of the situation sank in, Kyle’s swagger crumbling into panic. Allison was ashen, her eyes darting between me and her husband. “Rebecca, what did you do?” she whispered, disbelief coating her words.
