I never believed in the idea of “pausing” a relationship — but when Jack told me he needed space to “work on himself,” I respected his wishes. Weeks passed with no calls or replies, and eventually, I accepted that he was gone. To fill the silence, I began volunteering at an animal shelter, where I unexpectedly found comfort in a gentle senior dog. Bringing him home gave me a sense of peace I hadn’t felt in months.
Just when I had started to move forward, Jack appeared at my door as if nothing had happened. He came in smiling, talking about how he was ready to “unpause” our relationship. But the moment my dog padded into the room, his expression changed. Instead of joy at seeing me again, he accused me of betraying him by adopting a pet, knowing he was allergic. I was stunned — especially when he admitted this had been some sort of “test” to see what I’d do in his absence.
