I swallowed, my eyes flicking to my brother. He nodded for me to continue, his expression grave.
“I discovered something during my illness that shattered my trust in him. Your father has been living a double life. For years, he has been involved in illegal activities, things that could hurt not only him but us as well. I didn’t want to believe it at first, but the evidence was undeniable. I’ve enclosed documents to prove it.”
My hands shook as I unfolded the second paper from the envelope. There were copies of financial statements, accounts I didn’t recognize, and transactions that didn’t make sense. Alongside them was a note from a private investigator confirming our mother’s suspicions.
“How could this be possible?” I whispered, glancing at my brother. He looked as pale as I felt.
“There’s more,” he said, his voice barely audible over the noise of the wedding celebration behind us. “Mom was scared. She didn’t know what to do and didn’t want to tell us while she was sick. She hoped Dad would change or that she could stop it before it got out of hand.”
“But she didn’t,” I replied softly, my heart aching for my mother who had carried this burden alone.
“What do we do, Claire?” my brother asked, his eyes wide with fear and confusion.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. The truth felt like a physical weight, pressing down on me. Our father, the man I had trusted my whole life, was not who I thought he was. And now, he was marrying my aunt, someone who might have known his secrets all along.
I closed my eyes, the sound of laughter and music fading into the background. “We need to confront him,” I said finally. “We need answers.
Together, my brother and I stepped back into the crowd, the festive atmosphere feeling surreal around us. I spotted our father and Laura, smiling and oblivious to the storm brewing in our hearts. As we approached them, I knew our lives would never be the same. This was not just about uncovering our father’s secrets but about finding the courage to face whatever came next.
