“What do you mean, something bad?” I pressed, my voice trembling as I tried to comprehend the gravity of her revelation.

“Illegal things, Mom. They’re involved in some sort of scheme, and I overheard them talking about needing to get rid of… obstacles,” she said, her voice breaking. “I don’t know exactly what it means, but I heard Dad mention something about you being a ‘liability’ if things went wrong.”

My blood ran cold. The man I had spent years building a life with was not the person I thought he was. I felt a wave of betrayal and fear crash over me. Suddenly, everything clicked—the urgency in Sarah’s plea, the warning to get away. She had saved me from something I couldn’t even begin to fathom.

“Sarah, are you sure about this?” I asked, needing confirmation, even though her eyes already told me the truth.
