Everyone has their own bedtime rituals — some people need complete darkness, others adjust their blankets a dozen times, and many hug a favorite pillow. Yet there’s one surprisingly common habit that often goes unnoticed: sticking one foot out from under the covers. While it may seem like a simple comfort preference, this small action actually plays a role in how easily we fall asleep and how restful our night becomes.
Sleep specialists explain that as bedtime approaches, the body naturally cools down through a process called vasodilation, where the blood vessels in our hands and feet widen to release heat. Extending a foot outside the blankets helps this cooling process happen more quickly, gently signaling to the brain that it’s time to rest. This instinctive behavior can be seen even in babies, whose warm ears and noses often show their bodies preparing for sleep by letting go of extra heat.
