The Most Common Air Fryer Mistake—and How to Avoid It

Using an air fryer has become a daily routine for many households, thanks to its convenience and ability to cook meals quickly with less oil. However, one common mistake users often make is overloading the basket or placing food coated in excessive oil or marinades. When too much oil collects at the bottom or drips onto the heating element, it can lead to smoke buildup and, in rare cases, cause overheating or flames. This doesn’t mean air fryers are unsafe—it simply highlights the importance of using them correctly.

Another frequent oversight is not cleaning the air fryer regularly. Food residue, oil buildup, and crumbs left from previous cooking sessions can accumulate over time. When the appliance is used again, especially at high temperatures, leftover grease may begin to smoke and create a burning odor. If ignored repeatedly, this buildup increases the risk of overheating. A simple wipe-down of the basket and tray after each use can prevent this entirely.
