‘Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘Gilmore Girls’ actor dies at 87

Dion Anderson, known for his roles in the legendary film Shawshank Redemption and the television series Gilmore Girls, has passed away at 87. Now, tributes are pouring in.

According to information provided by Funeraria del Angel Santa Paula, he died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on April 26, 2026.

Born on August 6, 1938, in Cameron County, Texas, he lived a remarkable life.

Dion served in the U.S. Army as a member of the Finance Corps before continuing his education. He went on to earn several degrees, including English Literature, History, Television Production, Political Science, Economics, and Fine Arts.

In fact, his studies would take him all the way to London, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Economics and Political Science from the London School of Economics and a master’s of Fine Arts from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.

Dion Anderson began his acting career teaching Shakespeare in Florida before joining the Voice of America, working in film and television. As the Vietnam War broke out, he helped build television network facilities in South Vietnam and trained local staff.

Later, he would also help the U.S. Foreign Service and the State Department create radio and television networks in Iran, while simultaneously teaching English, organizing art exhibits, and producing plays.
