My name is Daryl, and this is the story of how an unexpected family transformed my entire life. Since my high school days, I had only ever loved one woman, a girl named Charlotte. Life, however, had different plans for us, and we were never able to be together. Years drifted by, taking us in different directions, until I received the devastating news that she had passed away at the young age of thirty-five. The tragedy left behind nine beautiful daughters, all half-sisters, with no willing parents to take them in. Charlotte had given birth to them over the years with four different men, none of whom were willing to step up. Two of the fathers had passed away, one was incarcerated, and the fourth had left the country. The grim truth was that none of the men had ever genuinely wanted to be a father to these children.
When I heard about the situation through a former high school friend who helped me keep tabs on Charlotte’s life, I knew I could not just walk away. I had already had the pleasure of meeting Charlotte’s children prior to this tragedy. Without a second thought, I found out where the children had been taken and arrived unannounced at the social worker’s office. I will never forget the absolute shock on her face when I declared that I was not leaving without all nine of the girls. The adoption process was not easy and took considerable time, but recognizing the danger of the children being separated and lost in the foster system, she worked behind the scenes to fast-track the trial period. While we waited for official approval, all nine girls came to live with me.
