Despite the backlash, some experts defended the approach. Parenting specialist Dr. Deborah Gilboa explained that using a leash does not harm a child’s development. She noted that if the alternative is keeping children confined at home, then a leash can be a helpful and safer option—especially for younger or neurodiverse children.

She added that as children grow older, parents should rely more on communication rather than tools like leashes. Ultimately, parenting styles differ, and many believe parents should have the freedom to make choices that best ensure their children’s safety without facing constant judgment.
