I began counting silently in my head, mentally preparing for the next move. One… two… three. On three, I slowly pushed myself up, careful not to make any sudden noises. Caleb followed suit, mimicking my stealth. The house was eerily silent, the tension palpable as we crept toward the back door, hearts racing in synchrony.

Every creak of the floorboards felt magnified, echoing in the quiet room. I cast a quick glance behind us, half expecting Ethan to reappear or the door to burst open. But the house remained still, the silence seemingly watching us with bated breath.

We reached the back door, and I gently turned the knob, flinching at the soft click. We slipped out into the cool night, the fresh air a stark contrast to the suffocating dread inside. I closed the door behind us as quietly as possible, hoping against hope that Ethan wouldn’t notice our escape until it was too late.

Under the moonlight, we hurried across the yard, the grass damp beneath our feet. I fished out my phone from my pocket, praying it had enough battery. With shaky hands, I dialed 911, forcing myself to stay calm as the operator’s voice came through.

I explained the situation in a hushed tone, emphasizing the urgency. The operator assured me help was on the way, instructing us to find a safe place to wait. We made our way to the neighbor’s house, where a soft porch light offered a welcome beacon.

Mrs. Thompson, our kindly elderly neighbor, answered the door almost immediately. Her eyes widened with concern as she took in our disheveled appearance. Without hesitation, she ushered us inside, wrapping a comforting arm around Caleb, who clung to her like a lifeline.

Inside the safety of her living room, I felt the first real wave of relief. But the fear lingered, a dark cloud promising a storm. I knew Ethan wouldn’t give up easily, and the woman on the phone—whoever she was—wouldn’t either.

As we waited for the police, I held Caleb close, promising myself that I wouldn’t let anything happen to him. The authorities arrived swiftly, taking our statements and assuring us they’d find Ethan.

In the hours that followed, as dawn crept over the horizon, I realized just how deep the betrayal ran. But amidst the chaos and fear, one thing remained clear: Caleb and I had each other, and together we would face whatever came next—stronger, wiser, and unyielding.
