He joined the Lonesome River Band from 1990 to 2001 and also released several solo albums. His accolades include over seven International Bluegrass Music Association Awards, including Male Vocalist of the Year (1995, 1998, 1999) and Songwriter of the Year (2022).

Bowman co-wrote hits for major stars, including Brooks & Dunn’s “It’s Getting Better All the Time”, Kenny Chesney’s “Never Wanted Nothing More”, and Lee Ann Womack’s “The Healing Kind”.

He also co-wrote three songs on Chris Stapleton’s album Traveller, including “Nobody to Blame”, which won Song of the Year at the ACM Awards in 2016.

Bowman honored his late mother in an ACM speech, recalling how she encouraged him to write songs at age 14:

“I went back there and did that and I’ve been doing that ever since thanks to my mama. She’s passed away, Hazel Bowman.”

After the tragic news, tributes from fellow musicians have poured in.

Billy Strings called him “one of the best entertainers in bluegrass and country music. He lit up any room he was in.”

Dierks Bentley shared a touching memory:
“Bowman serenaded my wife Cassidy on a tour bus with ‘It’s Getting Better All the Time’ after hearing it was her favorite song. It was the sweetest thing to do, and that’s just how he was. Thoughts and prayers for his family, and for all the RoBo fans out there, as he’s affectionately referred to in my band. We all loved him.”

Dan Tyminski, Bowman’s longtime bandmate in the Lonesome River Band, called him a brother: ”That’s what he was to me. So much more than an old friend and band mate. We formed a bond years ago that we carried with us through life knowing that we had something special together. The whole world will feel this devastating loss and he will forever be my brother.”

John Carter-Cash, son of Johnny Cash, shared on Instagram: ”All my love goes out to family of Ronnie Bowman. Ronnie was a friend and an amazing vocalist and musician. Love to all.”

Fans also shared memories of the talented musician. One Facebook, one user wrote:

”We’re heartbroken. Prayers for all of his family and many friends.”

Another fan remembered meeting Bowman at a festival:

”Had the pleasure of meeting him once at a bluegrass festival I used to help with. Was overwhelmed with his kindness and his apparent love for the Lord. So sorry to hear of his passing. Prayers for his family and friends.”

On Instagram, a fellow musician reflected:
”Words cannot express the immense sorrow that has hit our community and our family. I have a lot of mentors and a lot of friends I consider family, and Ronnie Bowman was one of them. Ronnie, we are gonna miss you, but I know I’ll see you again. Rest easy.”

Award-winning bluegrass musician Rhonda Vincent posted a heartfelt message with a photo of herself and Bowman:

”Our hearts are broken to hear of the passing of the legendary Ronnie Bowman. Our love and prayers go out to his family. He was one of the kindest people I’ve met. An incredible vocalist, prolific award-winning songwriter, but most of all just a beautiful person. He will be tremendously missed in not only the bluegrass community, but well beyond with all the lives he has touched.”

Ronnie Bowman is survived by his wife, Garnet Imes Bowman and their daughter, Chassidy Bowman.
