FBI sends warning to California police over possible Iran ‘surprise attack’

The two-week-old military campaign against Iran took a chilling turn toward the American home front this week. While U.S. forces continued heavy bombardment of Iranian targets, the FBI issued a startling alert to California law enforcement: the Islamic Republic may be planning a “surprise attack” using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched from unidentified vessels off the West Coast.

The warning, distributed to police departments across the Golden State in late February and highlighted by major news outlets this week, details an alleged Iranian aspiration to retaliate for Operation Epic Fury—the joint U.S.-Israeli offensive launched on February 28. According to the bureau, the potential plot involves drones targeting unspecified locations in California.

We recently acquired information that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United State Homeland,” the alert read.

While the FBI noted it has no specific information on the timing or perpetrators, the threat has put the West Coast on high alert. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department has already maintained an “elevated level of readiness,” increasing patrols around religious and cultural institutions. California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office confirmed it is working in lockstep with federal officials to “protect our communities” as global tensions boil over.

The Battle for the Strait of Hormuz

Across the globe, the conflict has entered a volatile new phase in the Strait of Hormuz—the world’s most critical energy artery. On Thursday, reports from CNN and CBS confirmed that Iran has begun sowing sea mines in the channel, through which 20% of the world’s oil flows. The strait has effectively been described as a “death valley” for commercial shipping.
