“Hello there,” Alexander said softly, meeting Emily’s tear-filled eyes. “My name is Alexander. What’s yours?”

“E-Emily,” she replied hesitantly, clutching her teddy bear even tighter.

Alexander gave her a reassuring smile. “Emily, it looks like you could use a friend. Would you like to come with me?”

Emily looked back at the closed door of the house that no longer welcomed her. Her stepmother’s harsh words still echoed in her mind. With a small nod, she agreed. It wasn’t just the offer of help that drew her in; it was the kindness in Alexander’s eyes, something she desperately needed.

Carefully, Alexander helped her gather her scattered belongings and bundled them into the car. As they drove away, Emily peeked out the window for one last glance at the house, a place that had once been her sanctuary but was now just a memory.

Alexander took her to a cozy diner nearby. He ordered a hot chocolate for Emily and a coffee for himself. As she sipped the warm drink, Emily felt a little of the chill in her bones begin to thaw.
