Mrs. Sterling’s eyes widened with disbelief as Chief Mike’s acknowledgment of my identity sank in. She faltered, her act of martyrdom breaking apart under the weight of a name she never imagined was linked to her “freeloader” daughter-in-law. I took that moment to steady myself and speak with the authority she never knew I had.

“Thank you, Chief Mike,” I said, voice firm despite the throbbing pain. “Please ensure this woman is removed from the premises and that my children are safe.”

Chief Mike nodded, and with a swift motion of his hand, two of his officers took hold of Mrs. Sterling. Her protests were sharp and venomous, but they fell on deaf ears. As she was escorted out of the room, her eyes locked onto mine, full of disbelief and fury.
