“Where’s the ambulance?” I heard myself ask, though I knew the answer. It would take time for them to arrive, time that felt infinite as we awaited help. Meanwhile, the guests’ murmuring was a low buzz, a chorus of disbelief and judgment as they craned their necks to capture every detail on their phones.

My parents’ reactions were a painful reminder of the generational chasm between us. Gerald had not yet moved from his position, still holding the belt with a grip that suggested confusion about why he was suddenly the focus of so much scrutiny. His face bore the expression of a man used to authority, suddenly uncertain of its limits. My mother, in turn, maintained her expression of indignant disbelief, as if the gravity of the situation had failed to penetrate her carefully constructed façade of familial perfection.

It was Vanessa’s reaction that tightened the knot in my stomach. Her nonchalance, the casual way she seemed to regard Lily’s plight as a lesson rather than an emergency, was a mirror reflecting the values we’d been raised with, values I had spent my adult life trying to escape.

I felt a surge of bitterness, a deep well of anger at the realization that these were the people I had once called family. Their values, their priorities, had never truly aligned with mine, and now that dissonance had culminated in violence against my own child.

As the sirens finally grew louder, cutting through the murmur of voices, a sense of resolve washed over me. This was not just an attack on Lily; it was an attack on everything I believed in as a parent and as a human being. The guests’ recordings would serve as evidence, a testament to the events that had unfolded, and I intended to ensure that justice was served.

Lily was taken to the hospital, where she would receive the care she so desperately needed. Meanwhile, I prepared myself for the inevitable legal battle that lay ahead. My father, my mother, Vanessa—all of them would face the consequences of their actions or inaction.

Because while I had left behind the values they clung to so dearly, I had taken with me the strength to stand against them when they crossed a line that should never have been crossed.
