Police say Smith-Katsanis had 11 different drugs in her system at the time of a fatal traffic crash that killed JPSO motorcycle deputy Christopher Ohlmeyer. They include amphetamines, anti-depressants and benzodiazepines.

Smith-Katsanis’ attorney Brian Capitelli argued in court that all drugs in her system at the time of the crash were drugs she had prescriptions for. Orleans Parish Assistant District Attorney Abigail Macdonald argued it didn’t matter whether she had prescriptions for the medications she was allegedly on or not.

Ohlmeyer, 41, was escorting a funeral procession on Airline Highway near Mistletoe Street Jan. 30 when he was hit. Capitelli expressed his condolences for the JPSO community in light of his death.

Court records Fox 8 obtained Thursday afternoon reveal more details about the New Orleans Police Department investigation into Smith-Katsanis.

Authorities say after the crash, police interviewed Smith-Katsanis at a hospital. There, they say, she told police she exited the interstate on Airline Highway and saw the funeral procession. She soon changed lanes, and it was then she said she “hit something and was unsure what she had hit.”

“According to Ms. Katsanis, she did not see anything directly in front of her prior to impact,” police wrote in court records.

Police also wrote in court records Smith-Katsanis traveled 300 feet before coming to a stop on Airline Highway. Police say Smith-Katsanis seemed impaired at the time of the interview due to slurred speech, signs of fatigue and the inability to stay on topic.

At the hospital, authorities say they conducted a blood and urine drug test on Smith-Katsanis. The drug test revealed the combination of numerous drugs, police wrote in court records.

Authorities say they investigated the warnings listed with the drugs Smith-Katsanis allegedly consumed.

Most of the drugs Smith-Katsanis allegedly consumed had warning labels with common side effects listed as “drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, impaired coordination, difficulty concentrating and warnings against driving while taking the drug,” police wrote in the records.
