Branded a “monster” and abused at home

.His mother said he suffered from “nightmares and anti-social behavior,” and suffered from a concussion and a temporary loss of vision in one eye after the attack. Her mother launched a $10,000 lawsuit, but it was eventually dismissed.

While he was raised by his mother, she didn’t do him any good. As he was beaten up in school, he also lived in an abusive home. He accused her of being an alcoholic, smoking marijuana, abusing prescription drugs, and even stealing his paychecks as he grew older. He also accused her of contributing to problems in his upbringing.

However, his mother denied everything. In fact, she even filed a $10 million defamation suit against her son. While she won in court, she reportedly only received $25,000, with most of it going to legal fees.

In 2001, speaking with Salon, his mother said, “Everybody was saying, ‘That child is out of control, he needs to be spanked, he’s not minding, he’s a monster’ and so on. I didn’t believe in spanking, I never raised my voice to him. I never allowed anybody to raise their voice to him.

A year before, she said, “Marshall was so hateful and mean. He hurt me so bad, and I’m releasing a lot of hurt.”

Many things in his childhood were troubling, and the fact that he and his mother were basically the oky caucasians in a predominantly Black area, he experienced a lot of bullying too. He dropped out of school, but it wasn’t necessarily because he simply struggled in the classroom. Instead, he had found another passion in life, which would change a music genre forever: Rapping.

Marshall Mathers, also known as Eminem, began his music career at 14, when he seriously considered becoming a rapper. He slammed his mother in several of the songs he released.

On the 2002 track Cleanin’ Out My Closet, Eminem criticized his mother throughout the song. He even said he was a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, rapping, “Goin’ through public housing systems, a victim of Münchausen’s Syndrome / My whole life I was made to believe I was sick when I wasn’t.”

Eminem would go on to rap extensively about his childhood, using it to reveal personal details from his past. His childhood shaped him both as a person and as a rapper, as many fans and those he has worked with have praised him for his authenticity and for his willingness to expose trauma through his music, which resonates so deeply with others.

In 1995, he released his first single. It also marked the year he became a father for the first time with longtime girlfriend Kim Scott. After everything he had been through, the legendary artist knew that he never wanted his children to go through what he had.

Turned an abusive childhood into becoming a world star

In a 2004 interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, music journalist Touré explained that he had noticed Marshall being very respectful toward his daughter, Halie, when they were playing. The journalist stated that “a lot of people talk down to little kids, but you talk to her like she’s intelligent.

Eminem replied, “Thank you for seeing that. I just want her and my immediate family — my daughter, my niece, and my little brother — to have things I didn’t have: love and material things. But I can’t just buy them things. I have to be there. That’s a cop-out if I just popped up once in a while, didn’t have custody of my daughter and my niece.”

In 2002, the movie 8 Mile, which Eminem himself starred in and which drew on autobiographical elements from his life, became a huge success. The artist even won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the tune “Lose Yourself” from the movie.

In 1997, Kim decided to leave him, taking his daughter with her. It led him down a dark path of substance abuse, turning to alcohol and drugs. But out of that, creativity rose. It led to his breakthrough album, The Slim Shady LP, after he signed a contract with music legend Dr. Dre.

Their first collaboration, on the song My Name Is, served as the starting point for Eminem becoming a legend in the music business.

Eminem: a father of three

Today, Eminem is a father of three. Besides biological daughter Halie, he also adopted daughters Alaina Marie Scott (Kim’s niece) and Stevie Laine Scott (formerly Whitney, Kim’s daughter. He is living a quiet life with a low-key persona, having stepped away from the spotlight. Still, he makes some appearances and music collaborations.

His mother, Debbie, died in 2024, five years after his father died of a reported heart attack.

With songs such as Mockingbird, The Way I Am, Rapo God, Not Afraid, Criminal, Without Me, ‘Till I Collapse, Stan, and Lose Yourself, he is considered one of the best rappers of all time and highly respected in the music business.
